How to care for your Yorkie

Yorkshire terriers are small dogs that hold a vibrant personality that is big for its cute size. They are great as indoor pets and are very sociable dogs. Yorkshire terrier care is very easy due to their small size, and you can do most of them at home if armed with the right tools.

Yorkshire terrier care tip # 1: Brush, brush, brush.
Yorkies have a single coat of fur, which is usually very easy to maintain. Always remember to brush their coat daily, and wash it every 7 to 10 days. You should bathe your Yorkie in pet shampoos such as Pet Silk or EQYSS Premier Color Intensifying shampoo, and avoid human shampoo. Before and after bathing them, always remember to brush their coat so as to avoid matting its fur.

Yorkshire terrier care tip # 2: Watch out for wheezing.
This breed is prone to having collapsing trachea. Chihuahuas, pomeranians, shih tzus, lasa apsos, toy poodles, and yorkies are all susceptible in acquiring this disease. A sign that your dog is suffering from this ailment include reverse sneezing, if it wheezes as if it has trouble breathing, then stands still and stretches out its neck and elbows. A remedy to this is to cover its nose and let it inhale through the mouth, while gently rubbing the throat to induce swallowing. Hopefully your yorkie would be fine after a couple of minutes. Another sign might be if your dog produces a raspy sound while breathing and coughs when you try to rub its throat. Either way, the best thing to do is go to the vet and get him checked out.

Yorkshire terrier care tip # 3: Look out for hypoglycemia.
Hypoglycemia is characterized by lethargic dogs that have no appetite for food and are seemingly worn-out the whole day. Since it is caused by low blood sugar, it is important to raise your yorkie’s blood glucose level before he becomes even sicker and worse, goes comatose. Mix corn syrup or plain sugar with water, and feed it to his mouth through a syringe four times a day.
